ALERT Welcome to Pitt’s iLab System!
Pitt’s iLab is integrated with our single sign-on and billing systems, linking faculty and staff grants to reserved time and services.
As of January 2026, we have 36 shared research facilities online with more expected to onboard throughout 2026.
Important: The department field for all Pitt employees has been standardized using a naming convention. Please do not modify this field, as it is essential for building templates that enable automated reporting.
Please review our Shared Facilities webpage and the iLab training material available in the “Using Core Facilities” section.

The Pitt Biospecimen Core (PBC) is funded and operated through a partnership between the Department of Pathology within the School of Medicine, the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The Research Histology Lab is a division of the PBC that provides high quality services that are equivalent and in some aspects, superior to clinical grade expectations.
The lab was established in 1991 with the primary focus on human genitourinary and basic histology on non-human samples which progressed to mainly non-human samples. In 2013, the laboratory underwent a complete revitalization where services were expanded to include frozen sectioning, histochemical staining (special stains) as well as expanding the labs capabilities dealing with various protocol requirements and tissue/sample types. The IHC testing methodology was improved as well as the focus on quality, reproducibility and turn-around times. The tissue micro array (TMA) area was updated and enhanced to improve quality and turn around time. These became the driving aspects which resulted in a significant increase of lab work and the addition of key, highly qualified personnel. We are a customer based service that thrives on feedback, collaboration and loyalty while operating within the local, state and federal guidelines and laws.
The limitations of the lab have yet to be reached. We work directly with the researchers/investigators to obtain their aspirations and expectations while transforming that information into a feasible histologic rationale to achieve their goal(s). For a complete list of services, please refer to the price list or inquire.
